It is well-known that heuristic path integral expressions play an important role in theoretical physics, in particular in quantum field theory. In the last years it turned out that they are also surprisingly useful in pure mathematics, in spite of their ill-defined character. In my talk I will concentrate on one of the best known examples for this phenomenon: the Chern-Simons path integral and its applications in low dimensional topology.
