In this talk I will discuss recent work relating bounds for the principal eigenvalue of operators to the supremum of the torsion aka the exit time for a stochastic process. The original motivation comes from classical estimates for simply connected domains but with heat kernel techniques is extended to include all domains in Euclidean space as well as stable processes in probability and the p-Laplacian in nonlinear analysis.
